Assam State Transport Corporation was constituted under Road Transport Corporation Act 1950 with effect from 31st March 1970. Before christened as a Corporation, it was a wing of Transport Department of Government of Assam. It came to effect from 16th January 1948 as “Road Transport, Assam” under Home Department. In the early part of 1950, it was transferred to Transport Department of Government of Assam.It continued as such till it became a Corporation with effect from 31st March 1970.

At the time of inception it began with only two buses running between Nagaon and Guwahati for a distance of 123 kms. Since then it has gone through many ups and downs to reach the present vibrant stage.
